Mistakes are often seen as setbacks, but in the world of design, they’re also powerful teachers. When working in Photoshop and Illustrator, every misstep offers an opportunity to sharpen your skills and creativity. Here’s a story about a mistake I made early in my design journey and the lessons I learned from it.

The Mistake

A few years ago, I was tasked with creating a promotional poster for a local event. Eager to showcase my skills, I spent hours perfecting every detail — the layout, fonts, color palette, and imagery. However, I didn’t pay enough attention to one critical element: file resolution.

Excited about the final result, I sent the design to the client, who promptly forwarded it to the printers. The problem? My file was in 72 DPI (dots per inch), the standard for digital screens, rather than 300 DPI, which is essential for print. The vibrant and sharp design I envisioned came out blurry and pixelated on paper.

The Fallout

The client wasn’t pleased, and I felt a wave of embarrassment. I had to redo the entire project, ensuring the resolution was correct this time. It not only cost extra time but also delayed the client’s schedule.

The Lessons

That mistake, though painful, taught me three crucial lessons that I carry to this day:

1. Understand the Medium

Always tailor your designs to the medium they’re intended for. Print and digital projects have different requirements for resolution, color mode (CMYK vs. RGB), and dimensions.

2. Double-Check Your Settings

Before you even begin, set up your document correctly. In Photoshop and Illustrator, selecting the right resolution, dimensions, and color mode at the start can save you hours of rework later.

3. Communicate with the Client

Ask questions about where and how the design will be used. Clear communication ensures you understand the project’s needs and deliver accordingly.

Moving Forward

Today, I see mistakes not as failures but as stepping stones to improvement. At WilSkill, we emphasize learning through doing, which includes making and correcting errors. Every missed detail or wrong setting becomes an opportunity to grow and refine your design instincts.

If you’re learning Photoshop or Illustrator, remember this: mistakes are a natural part of the process. Embrace them, learn from them, and keep pushing forward.

At WilSkill, we guide you through the fundamentals while encouraging exploration and creativity. Whether you’re new to design or brushing up on your skills, our courses help you navigate these challenges with confidence.

Let’s learn, make mistakes, and grow — together.
